Being an independent music producer comes with greater risks, but also the potential for greater rewards. If you want to make more money and can tolerate higher risks, freelancing is better for you. If you are risk-averse and want professional instruction while getting paid, get a job.
Getting a job as a music producer or recording engineer can be just as difficult as starting a business. You have to be very skilled to get your foot in the door. This is because most major labels rely on a small group of studios and producers to do most of their recordings. As a result, only a very select group of highly qualified individuals have the opportunity to work in these environments.
But especially in the age of simple and immediate communication, it is becoming easier and easier for independent producers to establish themselves as freelancers and make a name for themselves.
The music industry is really competitive, especially with the growing number of artists who are now able to put their music on streaming platforms. That meansthe performance of a company can be much higher, but you will experience more doubt, fear and anxiety during the process.
Also, with access to social platforms like TikTok, Twitch, YouTube, etc., it's really possible to build a huge audience and monetize it by doing what you love. You may have to do video editing and marketing and learn a little bit about design stuff that doesn't interest you that much, but you also probably have to do things that you wouldn't enjoy in a regular paid role.
REMEMBER:Different people take different paths. This is just advice. Some people will get a job and study and then later go down their own independent path. Some start right away. The choice is yours and what you think is best.

Highlight your resume
It is important to mention experiences relevant to the music production position you are applying for. You should also create a personal resume for each and every job you are applying for. As such, your resume for a sound design role should be distinct from a resume for a songwriting role or for a marketing role in a larger company.

A good resume should stand out from the rest without going overboard.This is especially important if you're applying for a design position or any other position that requires you to be proficient with software and music. Designing your resume in Photoshop will help you stand out and showcase your skills right away.
Adding other useful skills to the job is always a good thing, especially when you work in music production. You should definitely list any DAWs you are familiar with, as well as any other software or musical skills you have. All of these things add up to give you an edge over other candidates.
Write a cover letter
It's good when a cover letter feels personal. Explain how you found out about the position and that you understand the position you are applying for. You should look forward to writing to them and explaining a little bit about yourself and what you can bring to the table. You can create an online portfolio with web designers. It's a good idea to do this because employers just want a link where they can see your work. Platforms like Linktree are also useful for allowing potential employers to quickly navigate to your previous job, website, social media pages, and other useful links.
Volunteer at a gym/become a runner
As a studio agent or volunteer, you can get a paid position in music production. At first you might have to do tedious chores like getting coffee for the team, but over time they'll help you set up the mic and take part in mixing sessions. This is a great way to gain experience, skills and socialize.
Apply for another position at a music company.
If you have different skills, they can come in handy for getting your foot in the door. Once you make musical connections, people are more likely to recommend you. For example, if you're good at marketing, you could get a marketing position at Warner Music. From there, it's easier to switch roles on a job once you're in it.
